Nobel Peace Prize Row: Trump’s Medal Acceptance Triggers Sharp Criticism in Norway
Norwegian political figures have voiced sharp criticism over the recent controversy involving former U.S. President Donald Trump and his association with a Nobel Peace Prize–related medal. The issue surfaced after Trump accepted a medal connected to the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Marรญa Corina Machado. Leaders in Norway argued that linking Trump to such an honor undermines the core principles of the Nobel Peace Prize, which traditionally celebrates efforts toward peace, dialogue, and human rights. According to them, Trump’s political history and international decisions do not reflect the spirit of the award.
Several lawmakers warned that this association could weaken the global credibility of the Nobel Peace Prize by drawing it into political disputes. They stressed that the prize should remain independent and free from controversial symbolism. On the other hand, Trump’s supporters maintain that his diplomatic initiatives deserve acknowledgment, even if his leadership remains polarizing. The debate has extended beyond Norway, sparking broader conversations across Europe about how prestigious international honors should be protected from political influence and misuse.
