Kolkata Weather Overview: How the Last 5 Days Felt Across the City

During the last five days, Kolkata has experienced a noticeable shift into winter, with cold conditions becoming more consistent throughout the day. Unlike the usual pattern where cold is limited to early mornings and nights, this time the chill remained even during daylight hours. Daytime temperatures stayed unusually low, while nights felt cooler than what residents generally expect during this time of year.

The minimum temperatures stayed close to the lower teens and early twenties, making mornings particularly cold. Many people stepped out wearing sweaters, jackets, and scarves, something that is not always common in Kolkata’s mild winters. Afternoon temperatures also struggled to rise comfortably, often remaining in the low to mid-20s, giving the city a persistent cold feel.

Another key feature of the past five days was the regular presence of fog and haze, especially during early mornings. Visibility dropped in several areas, affecting road traffic and train schedules. Calm wind conditions combined with moisture in the air allowed fog to form easily, while cool north-westerly winds helped maintain the lower temperature levels across the region.

Along with the cold weather, air quality became a growing concern. Due to weak winds and temperature inversion, pollutants remained trapped near ground level. In many parts of the city, the air quality index stayed in the poor category, making breathing uncomfortable for sensitive groups such as children, senior citizens, and people with asthma. The situation worsened after festive activities, as smoke and dust lingered longer than usual.

Residents adjusted to the weather by limiting early morning outings, using room heaters, and consuming more warm food and beverages. Local markets also saw increased demand for winter clothing. Weather experts indicate that cool winds are likely to continue, which means Kolkata may experience similar conditions in the coming days. While temperatures may rise slightly during afternoons, mornings and nights are expected to remain cold.

Overall, the last five days in Kolkata clearly reflected a strong winter phase, marked by low temperatures, foggy mornings, and declining air quality. The city has fully transitioned into winter mode, and residents are preparing themselves for continued cold conditions ahead.
