“Record-Breaking Diwali: Indians Spend Big as Markets Boom Beyond ₹6 Trillion”
Diwali Turns into Economic Powerhouse: Indian Consumers Drive Massive Market Growth.
This year’s Diwali celebration saw Indian consumers and traders break records, with total festive-season sales soaring to around ₹6.05 lakh crore (₹6.05 trillion) — marking a nearly 25% increase over last year’s figure of ₹4.25 lakh crore. Of that, goods trade alone accounted for about ₹5.40 lakh crore, and services contributed approximately ₹65,000 crore, according to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) report. Home-decor, garments, consumer electronics, jewellery, sweets, and dry fruits emerged as top categories, with traditional markets (brick & mortar, Tier 2/3 towns) contributing around 85% of the total turnover.
The strong performance is credited to recent GST rate cuts that boosted affordability, the “Vocal for Local” wave that saw 87% of consumers opting for Indian-made products, and rising consumer confidence across rural and urban India. With tens of lakhs of temporary jobs created in logistics, packaging and retail for the season, and digitised payments scaling rapidly, Diwali 2025 has turned into not just a cultural festival, but a massive economic stimulus for the Indian market.
