India is building a Dam in Arunachal Pradesh to counter China .
Arunachal Pradesh, often called the “Hydropower Capital of India,” hosts some of the country’s largest and most ambitious dam projects. The state’s rugged terrain and fast-flowing rivers like the Dibang, Siang, Subansiri, and Kameng provide enormous hydropower potential. Among the major projects, the Dibang Multipurpose Project with a height of ~278 meters and a capacity of 2,880 MW is set to be India’s tallest concrete gravity dam, costing around ₹31,875 crore and expected to be completed by 2032. The Upper Siang Multipurpose Project, planned on the Siang River, is an 11,000 MW venture aimed at both energy generation and strategic river regulation. Other significant projects include the Ranganadi Hydro Electric Project (405 MW), Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (2,000 MW), and Kameng Hydropower Station (600 MW), along with several smaller ventures like Tato-I and Heo, all contributing to Arunachal Pradesh’s power output and regional development. While these dams promise substantial benefits—massive electricity generation, job creation, flood control, and local development—they also present challenges such as environmental impacts, displacement of communities, seismic risks, and downstream ecological concerns. The state government, in collaboration with central agencies like NHPC and NEEPCO, continues to push forward these projects, aiming to harness Arunachal Pradesh’s vast renewable energy potential while balancing social and ecological considerations.
